An image of Willy the Hillbilly from a Mountain Dew commercial.
Willy the Hillbilly was Mountain Dew's original mascot, first appearing in the 1940s. In the commercials, he was voiced by legendary country artist Grandpa Jones. He was featured on Mountain Dew packaging until 1969. He later appeared on Dewshine and Throwback's packaging.
History[]
In the 1950's and 1960's, he appeared on the glass bottles and most of the commercials. He was popular with Mountain Dew until 1969, when PepsiCo introduced a new logo for Mountain Dew, without the Hillbilly in an attempt for the company to shift its focus and packaging to a “younger, "enjoyable", and "outdoorsy” generation. In 2008, Mountain Dew reintroduced him for a limited time on a Green Label Art bottle.
Mountain Dew Throwback[]
In 2010, Willy the Hillbilly once again made a return to Mountain Dew's packaging in the form of his appearance on the label art for Throwback, which is made with real sugar instead of HFCS. Similar to what was featured in Mountain Dew commercials that he had appeared in, the new packaging shows him with the cork of the Mountain Dew jug shooting through his hat, making a hole. As he became popular with Mountain Dew again, an internet promotion called the "Mountain Dew Throwback Shack" was made in Mid-2011, which contained several so-called "treasures", such as a bathroom stool, an Arcade Machine game, and a secret stash of a discontinued Mountain Dew flavor, Revolution.
Willy the Hillbilly was removed from the flavor's packaging when it was rebranded as Mountain Dew Real Sugar in 2020.
Dewshine[]
In 2015, a clear citrus flavored Mountain Dew called Dewshine was released. Its label art featured the same image of Willy the Hillbilly used on Throwback's packaging. The flavor was discontinued in 2017.
