Thrashed Apple

Not to be confused with Electric Apple.

Thrashed Apple was a Franchise Exclusive Mountain Dew flavor available from September 2021 to February 2024 only at the Kroger Family of stores.

Description[]

Thrashed Apple was a Crisp Apple flavor of Mountain Dew. It had a cloudy green look, with a flavor profile comparable to the Villa Italian Kitchen exclusive, Electric Apple.

Tagline[]

Its tagline was "DEW Charged with Crisp Apple. Natural & Artificial Apple Flavor."

History[]

On May 13th, 2021, in a r/MountainDew Reddit post[1], Thrashed Apple was first leaked by a deleted user showing an image of Thrashed Apple in its 12-pack and 20-ounce bottle design. The photograph shows a potential release date of September 13th, 2021, leaving some people skeptical of its release date.

On various dates in 2021, there were some designs and photographs of Thrashed Apple on certain websites. These posts show it is slowly inching closer to its release to Kroger and Kroger-owned stores.

On August 26th, 2021, it was discovered that the Kroger website[2] listed a 20-ounce bottle online listing for Thrashed Apple. The listing read "Mt. Dew Thrashed Apple Soda - Available to purchase on September 13th!." The online listing on the site showed an official launch date, proving the previously mentioned rumors correct.

It was officially released in Kroger and Kroger-owned stores in the United States on September 13th, 2021[3], sold in 12 packs and 20-ounce bottles, as a permanent flavor.

Late 2022 discontinuation and subsequent reversal[]

In the last week of November 2022[4], Kroger decided to make Thrashed Apple on sale for $2.99 a 12 pack and 99 cents a 20-ounce bottle only for Kroger stores, but not Kroger-owned stores for the sale, leaving cult fans of the drink skeptical of its low sale price going through Mid-December 2022.

On November 30th, 2022, the official Kroger Twitter account stated[5] that it wasn't to be a permanent flavor and all the leftover stock of the flavor was being cleared out from their inventory for good.

However after its discontinuation announcement, fans of Thrashed Apple took it upon themselves to buy the remaining leftover stock out of most Kroger and Kroger-owned stores before the flavor was officially discontinued[6]. After the massive response from many fans, Kroger suddenly announced[7] they had once again made it a permanent flavor.

February 2024 discontinuation[]

On September 23rd, 2023[8], it was leaked by Team Supernova[9] that VooDEW 6.0, alongside its Zero Sugar variant, would be releasing in Fall 2024 with a collaboration of a top candy brand. Additionally, Kroger-exclusive Thrashed Apple would be nationally discontinued alongside Major Melon and Spark at the end of 2023, alongside the entirety of the Mountain Dew Energy line in January of 2024 with the then-discovered Mountain Dew Energy (Liberty Brew) and Mountain Dew Energy (Baja Laguna Lemonade) having been canceled.

Thrashed Apple was discontinued on February 5th, 2024, and replaced by Circle K-exclusive Purple Thunder as the new Kroger-exclusive flavor.

Trivia[]

  • On May 14th, 2021, in a Twitter post[10], a PepsiCo executive posted a photograph of a test bottle of Thrashed Apple. The picture itself reveals this flavor's number to be #512.
  • This flavor is the fourth Green Apple flavor of Mountain Dew. The first one being Diet Crave, the second being Electric Apple, the third being partly Green Label, and the fifth being partly Apple Cinnamon.
  • With Kroger owning other regional supermarket chains in the United States, there was debate among fans as to whether or not Thrashed Apple would get released to other Kroger-owned stores.
    • In August 2021, people discovered online listings[11] of 12-packs and 20-ounce bottles on some Kroger-owned supermarket websites. From the online listings alone, this confirmed that Thrashed Apple was likely getting released in Kroger-owned stores.
  • Much like Purple Thunder and Overdrive, on Thrashed Apple's packaging, there are some references to Kroger and Dew themselves. These references are "D T D" (Do The Dew), "1883" (the year that Kroger was founded), and "K" (stands for Kroger's first letter of its name).
  • Promotional material for Thrashed Apple can be found here[12].
