Supernova

Supernova was a Mountain Dew flavor, first appearing as a contestant in the first DEWmocracy promotion. It returned for a limited time in Back by Popular DEWmand along with Typhoon and Pitch Black from May to July in 2011.

Description[]

Supernova was a Strawberry-Melon flavor of Mountain Dew with added ginseng and was bright magenta in color.

Tagline[]

Its tagline was "DEW with a Blast of Strawberry Melon Flavor and Ginseng."

History[]

(2008) DEWmocracy 1[]

Main article: DEWmocracy 1

In November 2007, PepsiCo launched a new Mountain Dew marketing campaign. This campaign was named "DEWmocracy," tying the words Dew and Democracy together as the campaign centered around the idea of Dew drinkers designing the next permanent flavor on the line. DEWmocracy was released throughout various phases. Out of the 3 phase process, only three finalists were chosen: Voltage (a Raspberry Citrus flavor), Supernova (a pink Strawberry Melon flavor), and Revolution (a sky blue Wild Berry Fruit flavor).

Supernova, alongside its competitors, Voltage and Revolution, was officially released over the summer of 2008 to compete for a chance to become a permanent flavor. Drinkers were able to try all three flavors and vote on the DEWmocracy website on which they preferred for their favorite. Voting ended on August 19th, 2008, and Voltage was announced the winner, having won 41% of the votes, Supernova came in second place, with Revolution in third. Voltage was officially re-released in stores on December 29th of that year.

(2011) Back by Popular DEWmand Limited-Time release[]

Main article: Back by Popular DEWmand

After popular demand to bring back some discontinued Dew flavors, Mountain Dew announced that 2004's Pitch Black, 2008's Supernova, and 2010's Typhoon would be returning for a limited time together over the summer of 2011 as a part of the Back by Popular DEWmand promotion. It lasted until July 25th of that year.

International Release[]

Canada[]

Main article: DEWmocracy Canada

In March 2013, a voting promotion called DEWmocracy Canada was announced. The concept of its name and voting session alone is comparable and consists of competitors from prior American DEWmocracy promotions I from 2008 and II from 2010 (excluding Code Red). The candidates were Voltage, Supernova, Code Red, and White Out.

These four Dew flavors were released over the summer of 2013, competing against each other until July 4th, 2013, when the voting had ended. Voltage was announced the winner, leaving the losing flavors, Supernova, Code Red, and White Out discontinued until next year in a second promotion. Voltage was officially re-released to stores permanently on July 15th, 2013.

In 2014, these losing three flavors were re-released from high demand for the Canadian Back By Popular Dewmand. The flavors re-released again for 2014's DEWmocracy Canada promotion, where Code Red, White Out, and Supernova competed over the summer of 2014 until August 5th, 2014, when the voting ended. Code Red was announced the winner and the losing flavors, Supernova and White Out, were discontinued once again. Code Red was officially re-released to stores permanently on September 2nd, 2014.

Finland/Denmark[]

Main article: Supernova (Raspberry-Lemon)

A Raspberry-Lemon flavored soda was released under the Supernova name in 2012 in Finland, and 2016 in Denmark. The community sometimes refers to this version of Supernova as "Euronova."

The Philippines[]

Supernova was released for a limited time in the Philippines in 2009, as a Freeze at 7-Eleven, and in bottles. The freeze was released in collaboration with the online game Grand Chase along with Voltage (called High Voltage). The Freeze was called Arme Ice, named after one of the characters in the game, and was available from September to November of 2009.

There is nothing known about the bottled release at this time.

Freeze release[]

(2013, 2023) Canadian 7-Eleven[]

Main article: DEWmocracy Canada

For a brief period in 2013, participating Canadian 7-Eleven convenience stores offered a Slurpee variant of Supernova and Voltage while DEWmocracy Canada was underway. After the Canadian DEWmocracy ended, and Voltage was announced to be the winner, neither Supernova nor Voltage continued to be offered as Slurpee flavors. Code Red, White Out, and Supernova were released as Slurpee flavors as part of the Back By Popular DEWmand promotion in Canada in 2014.

After a decade of being discontinued, Supernova made a re-release as a Slurpee flavor starting May 2023 in 7-Eleven locations. It is currently unknown whether this is a limited-time release or a permanent flavor.
