Mountain Dew Zero Sugar is a Mountain Dew variant with zero calories (as its name implies), compared to the 290 calories in the original, and is sweetened with artificial sweeteners instead of Corn Syrup or Sugar that the original uses.
Description[]
Mountain Dew Zero Sugar is a modified version of the original formula, containing zero sugar but retaining the same Citrus taste and yellow-green color as the original Mountain Dew drink. It is a similar but separate drink from its two predecessors Sugar-Free Mountain Dew and Diet Mountain Dew. Unlike those two flavors, it does not contain concentrated orange juice.
Mountain Dew Zero Sugar and its flavor lineup have 20% more caffeine[1] than regular Mountain Dew, at 68mg/12oz can, instead of the 54mg for the Original and Diet varieties.
Tagline[]
Its tagline is "Zero Sugar DEW."
History[]
On September 11th, 2019, Mountain Dew Zero Sugar was first leaked on the Dew Drinker Discord, planning to get released in some sizes. At the time of this leak, there wasn't any known release date about it. A few months after this leak, it was soon discovered that it would be releasing on January 13th, 2020, in the United States.
On November 19th, 2019, YouTube channel myCountyMarket posted a new product review about the flavor on their video on YouTube[2]. The channel's video revealed that Mountain Dew Zero Sugar would be released sometime in early 2020 and that it would be promoted during Super Bowl LIV.
It was officially released in stores on January 13th, 2020 nationwide in the United States as a permanent flavor in various sizes such as 20-ounce Sidekick bottles, 24-ounce bottles, 16 ounces/16.9-ounce multipack bottles, 1-liter bottles, 2-liter bottles, 12-packs, 24-packs. Since February 2020, it has also been available in fountain form at Circle K locations, replacing the under-performing flavors Mountain Dew Ice and Pitch Black.
A few weeks later, it was promoted in a commercial during Super Bowl LIV that had a shade on a famous scene from the classic Warner Bros. Pictures horror film The Shining. It led to a massive boost in the popularity of Mountain Dew Zero Sugar.
In early 2023, it was leaked through Living Más[3] that Mountain Dew Zero Sugar will roll out at Taco Bell restaurants from January 23 to April 28 that year, replacing Diet Mountain Dew's spot on fountain machines.
International release[]
Canada[]
At the start of April 2020[4], following the American release of Mountain Dew Zero Sugar in January 2020, Mountain Dew Zero Sugar replaced Diet Mountain Dew in most of the country (unlike in the United States, where the two flavors coexist). This version has reduced caffeine, at 50mg/355mL. It was initially only available in 12 packs, but was later also released in 32 packs at Costco in 2023.
Arabia[]
Sometime around 2021 or 2022, following its North American release, Mountain Dew Zero Sugar was introduced into Kuwait, later spreading to other Arabian countries. Unlike in other countries, its Arabian release used a grey background similar to Diet Mountain Dew.
The Philippines[]
On September 1st, 2023, Mountain Dew Philippines' social media pages announced[5] that Mountain Dew Zero Sugar was introduced into the country. It was also teased with various posts since August 25th[6].
New Zealand[]
In 2024, Mountain Dew All Dew - No Sugar was renamed as Mountain Dew Zero Sugar. Like its Arabian counterpart, it continued to use the same grey background that its predecessor Mountain Dew All Dew - No Sugar had used, rather than the black background used in most other countries.
South Korea[]
On May 23rd, 2025, Mountain Dew South Korean social media pages teased[7] that Zero Sugar is coming soon by posting a picture or a preview of the can. In the picture, the can is mostly blacked out, though you can slightly see it.
It was announced[8] on May 27th, 2025, with a collaboration with a K-pop girl band called "QWER" in various posts and was officially released on May 31st[9] of that year and had online listings.[10]
Trivia[]
- This flavor was leaked long before its release on the Dew Drinker Discord.
- Prior to the 2023 reformulation, Pepsi Zero Sugar used to have a similar amount of caffeine (69mg/12oz) as Mountain Dew Zero Sugar. It is likely the reason why Zero Sugar Dew products have more caffeine than typical.
- Before its introduction, people were anxious that it would replace Diet Mountain Dew as the new low sugar drink in the United States. It was confirmed by a PepsiCo employee that there weren't any plans for Zero Sugar to replace Diet Mountain Dew. Instead, the two flavors will coexist.
- However, Mountain Dew Zero Sugar did replace Diet Mountain Dew at Taco Bell in early 2023.
- When Mountain Dew Zero Sugar was released in 2020, the 12-ounce cans had a matte finish[11]. Pepsi Zero Sugar also had the matte cans. Both lasted until Mid-2020 before reverting back to the standard finish cans.
- The Label Flavor series also had a 16-ounce can matte finish.
- QWER collaborated with Mountain Dew Korea on their Blue Zero Sugar flavor last year and the Original Zero Sugar flavor this year.
