Maui Burst is a Mountain Dew flavor released exclusively in Dollar General stores in October 2019 for a limited time before being released as a permanent flavor since February 2020 within the same store in the United States.
Description[]
Maui Burst is a Pineapple flavor of Mountain Dew. It is yellow in color, with a flavor profile comparable to 2022's Baja Gold.
While both flavors have roughly the same flavor profile, Maui Burst contains a natural Pineapple flavor whereas Baja Gold tends to shift towards a more artificial Pineapple flavor.
Tagline[]
Its previous tagline was "DEW with a Blast of Pineapple Flavor with Other Natural Flavors." while its 2025 redesign tagline is "Pineapple Flavor with Other Natural Flavors."
History[]
2019 Limited-Time release[]
On August 21st, 2019, on the Dew Drinker Discord, Maui Burst was first leaked by a trustworthy PepsiCo employee[1] by posting an image of a prototype 24-ounce design before being reverted to the 16-ounce can with a limited-time release window of October - November, further revealed as a October 16th[2] release date.
Maui Burst was officially released in Dollar General stores in the United States from October 16th, 2019, to November 2019, for a limited time, available only in 16-ounce cans.
2020 Permanent release[]
On February 1st, 2020[3], Dollar General announced in a press release that Maui Burst was re-released by popular demand to most Dollar General stores as a permanent flavor and sold in the same 16-ounce can size.
2020 - 2025 Size experimentation[]
From 2020 to 2025, PepsiCo experimented with the sizes of Maui Burst.
12-Packs: 2023 - Present[]
On October 4th, 2020, various 12-pack renders began to surface, hinting at a possible 12-pack release. However, this release was put on hold until December 2nd, 2022[4], when it was confirmed on the Dew Drinker Discord that Maui Burst would finally be released in 12-packs on April 10th, 2023.
16.9-ounce Bottles: 2021 - 2025[]
On January 14th, 2021[5], an anonymous PepsiCo employee mentioned the potential release of a multipack of 16.9-ounce bottles, which was ultimately launched in March 2021.
In a Sporked article published on October 18th, 2024[6], Team Supernova[7] revealed that Maui Burst in 16.9-ounce bottle 6-packs, Voltage's soda fountain, and Kickstart (Energizing Grape) will no longer be available in January 2025.
16-ounce Cans: 2019, 2020 - 2022, 20-ounce Bottles: 2022 - Present[]
On September 11th, 2021[8], a 20-ounce render was discovered on the PepsiCo Product Info page, suggesting a possible future release. Then, on February 24th, 2022[9], a Facebook post featured a photo of Maui Burst in 20-ounce bottles located in a Pepsi warehouse. Maui Burst officially launched in 20-ounce bottles in March 2022, replacing the 16-ounce cans.
Current sizes[]
With the 16.9-ounce bottle 6-packs being recently discontinued, the only available sizes of Maui Burst continue to be produced in 20-ounce bottles and 12-Pack cans.
Trivia[]
- Maui Burst is the first Franchise Exclusive limited-time flavor released only in 16-ounce cans. The second was Little Caesars's Mango Rush in its limited-time April/May 2025 release.
- Sasquench had a concept for a 16-ounce can design featuring the same Little Caesars franchise that Mango Rush intended to release. However, since this was merely a concept, it would have been the second flavor released only in 16-ounce cans, as it was never planned for an actual release.
- This flavor was leaked long before its release on the Dew Drinker Discord.
- Maui Burst has a very similar name to Baja Blast, Taco Bell's Franchise Exclusive flavor which initially released in 2004. Both have a similar ring in their names, although this is likely just a coincidence.
- Although people generally point to this flavor as the first Mountain Dew flavor available exclusively at a retail store, this is actually the second flavor with that status, with the first being the Walmart-exclusive 2011 re-release of Typhoon during Back by Popular DEWmand.
- Promotional material for Maui Burst variant can be found here[10].
- In early 2024[11], PepsiCo decided to rebrand the design of Maui Burst, changing it from green tikis on a yellow background to pineapples wearing MLG pixel glasses on a lighter yellow background. Many fans expressed their displeasure with this redesign, arguing that the current design using "dead memes" from the 2010s and its previous design was ahead of its time.
